"School Board Approves Birth Control Prescriptions"

There are so many things wrong with this, i don't even know where to begin.

PORTLAND, Maine —  Pupils at a city middle school will be able to get birth control pills and patches at their student health center after the local school board approved the proposal Wednesday evening.

The plan, offered by city health officials, makes King Middle School the first middle school in Maine to make a full range of contraception available to students in grades 6 through 8, according to the state Department of Health and Human Services.

There are no national figures on how many middle schools, where most students range in age from 11 to 13, provide such services.

"It's very rare that middle schools do this," said Divya Mohan, a spokeswoman for the National Assembly on School-Based Health Care.

The Portland School Committee voted 5-2 for the measure.

Chairman John Coynie voted against it, saying he felt providing the birth control was a parental responsibility. The other no vote came from Ben Meiklejohn, who said the consent form does not clearly define the services being offered.

Opponents cited religious and health objections.

Diane Miller, who said she has worked as a school nurse in another district for eight years, called the proposal "tragic" and asked "What would God have us do?"

Miller said the plan gives children an adult responsibility they are not ready for, and puts them at risk from sexually transmitted disease and emotional problems.

"I just don't know how we can even look at this and consider it," she said.

Peter Doyle, a former middle school teacher, said the proposal violates the rights of parents, potentially ignoring their special knowledge of their children's health, and puts young girls at risk of cancer from too early use of hormone-based contraceptives.

"You all are going to be responsible for the devastating effects on young women when this goes through," he said.

Those who favored the plan said it isn't about encouraging premature sex, but protecting kids who don't have strong support from their parents.

"Unfortunately, not every child is getting the kind of parental involvement that is going to help keep them safe," said Richard Verrier.

"If my daughter were not able to talk with me about something, if she couldn't reach me for whatever reason, to keep her safe and healthy, I would want to make sure she had access to those resources from trusted adults," Verrier said.

Condoms have been available since 2002 to King students who have parental permission to be treated at its student health center.

About one-fourth of student health centers that serve at least one grade of adolescents 11 and older dispense some form of contraception, said Mohan, whose Washington-based organization represents more than 1,700 school-based centers nationwide.

At King Middle School, birth control prescriptions will be given after a student undergoes a physical exam by a physician or nurse practitioner, said Lisa Belanger, who oversees Portland's student health centers.

Students treated at the centers must first get written parental permission, but under state law such treatment is confidential, and students decide for themselves whether to tell their parents about the services they receive.

Five of the 134 students who visited King's health center during the 2006-07 school year reported having sexual intercourse, said Amanda Rowe, lead nurse in Portland's school health centers.

A high school in Topeka, Kan., on Wednesday stopped providing free condoms to students after district officials learned of the month-old program. The district has a policy against providing contraceptives.

i'm still trying to think of something to say here, but i can't figure it out.  I can't tell if the age of the kids, the physical exam, who is paying for this is bothering me most.

GO SCHOOL VOUCHERS!

This is just wrong, I can't count the number of notes that my parents and those of my friends that never were seen by my parents yet they signed them. (none of the notes were for problems) My older sister showed me how to get and then sign my parents names. How many kids are going to do this and never tell their parents about getting birth control. If you take away the barriers and rules from kids they will do things they would not have done. The cost is another issue, who pays for this? I am sure the kids don't. There are always going to be those that will have sex and nothing will stop them but there are many more that wouldn't have had sex that will now because they can get the birth control so they feel they are safe.

The argument the school nurse is using is a bunch of Bravo Sierra. If these FEW kids don't have parents to teach them and support them, then maybe the state can step in an interfere with the lives of these kids to help keep them in school and help them from becoming the dross of society. When a school district or the government steps in and takes this right away from parents who want and act like parents, then we have a problem. It's bad enough that schools hand our condoms. We cannot let school districts take the responsibility of being a parent away from parents.

Splitt, anybody voting FOR vouchers is a moron, sorry buddy.

This is an interesting issue.  RCouger brings up the classic argument, "If you tell children about contraceptives then they'll use them."  I sure as hell hope so!!!  Kids that want to have sex are going to and they should be protected even if they are making a wrong choice.  And besides, I'm not sure about your kids but, I don't feel that an 11 year old who has no interest in sex will suddenly decide that they want to because they have access to birth control.  I will never understand how parents can think that if you talk to your children about sex, especially safe sex, that their kids will all of a sudden go out and do it.  That logic seems to fail a lot of parents in this State.  Don't believe me?  In 2000 Utah was 6th in the nation for teen pregnancy and that was after an 18.5% drop from the previous year!

The best argument in this article is Peter Doyles, "You all are going to be responsible for the devastating effects on young women when this goes through[.]"  He's acutally concerned about the health of the students, not the political or religious fall out.  If parents are teaching their children about abstenance then those kids are not going to run out and start having sex just because contraceptives are available to them.

My only other argument is that the children are under 18 and the parents should have access to their records so that they know what is going on in their childrens' lives.

My statement was not that talking to kids will cause them to go out and have sex like I stated kids that are going to have sex are going to have sex. My point was there is a group of kids that have talked about sex with parents, Teachers and others that don't have sex because of the risk of pregnancy. This group can now get Birth Control, and will feel as if they are safe so they will now have Sex. This is different than the if you tell them they will use them. This is taking away the parents responsibility to parent. There will be great harm to the young women who now use this. Like I stated there will be many who forge there parents signature to get the Birth Control.
Last Voting for Vouchers does not make someone a moron, You may give your opinion as to why you don't want vouchers that is fine but because someone may disagree with you and vote for Vouchers does not make them a moron.

I guess I'm a moron too because I support school vouchers.

The problem here is an overreaction in the system because a very small number of 11 to 14 year old girls may end up pregnant and their education may end because of this. I disagree with this overreaction because it interferes with the parental rights and RESPONSIBILITIES of the many.

Goose, you know calling someone a moron but not backup your argument is a mistake on this site.

Please tell us why you are so smart and not voting for school vouchers?
